Funding for Great Lakes research
Federal Support for Michigan Sea Grant Program
WASHINGTON – Michigan Sea Grant will receive $642,428 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow announced today. The award will help fund research, education and outreach efforts on issues affecting the Great Lakes.
“For more than 40 years, the Michigan Sea Grant program has brought together a broad range of groups with a shared love of the Great Lakes,” Levin said. “With this federal investment, Michigan Sea Grant will continue to bring tangible economic and environmental benefits to our state.”
“The Great Lakes are crucial to Michigan’s economy and our way of life,” said Stabenow. “This grant will help support collaborative research between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University that will preserve our Lakes for future generations.”
Michigan Sea Grant, a collaborative program of the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, is part of the NOAA-National Sea Grant program, which helps provide graduate student support and research at 32 university-based programs across the country. The Sea Grant program funds scientific research, education, training and extension projects designed to foster science-based decisions about the use and conservation of Great Lakes resources. Federal funds are matched with funds from other sources to carry out the programs.
