Great Lakes Environmental Map

Researchers at the University of Michigan and other institutions have developed the first-ever cumulative map of environmental stresses placed on the Great Lakes.

The map finds relatively little stress in Lake Superior, where the coastal population is low.

The stress level is higher in Lake Michigan, even in Escanaba, which is misspelled on the map.

And it’s extremely high in Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

The Lake Superior Watershed Partnership in marquette says although the map is useful, it may not show the whole picture.

The group says even with low stress in Lake Superior, it’s still important to maintain funding for environmental programs for the lake to prevent it from reaching a high stress level.
