MACKINAC CITY, Mich – An Upper Peninsula bridge closed over the weekend due to a bomb threat.

At around 2:30 pm yesterday, the Mackinac Bridge was closed to all traffic due to a called in bomb threat.

Michigan State Police Troopers received word of the threat and took action.

“They immediately notified the Bridge Authority and it was going to be a pretty easy decision to shut the bridge down. Troopers from the U.P. staging on the north side of the bridge were making sure traffic wasn’t going to go onto the bridge, said Lt. Marc Giannunzio, MSP Public Information Officer. “They did request MSP Bomb Squad and K-9 to the scene, who arrived at the scene pretty quick from what I understand. The whole incident didn’t take longer than three to four hours.”

The bridge was reopened after 5 p.m. by Michigan State Police.

The Mackinac City Police Department is handling the investigation.
