On two tires one can access thousands of miles of logging roads, abandoned railroad grades complete with ghost towns, state and national forest trails, single tracks, and off-season cross-country ski trails.

Several of these paths will wind you along three great lakes and through much of Michigan’s roaring waterfalls, peaceful wildlife, and historic lighthouses.

Additionally, Houghton and Marquette have earned recognition from the League of American Bicyclists as Silver Bicycle Friendly Communities. They are the only two in the Upper Peninsula, and only 487 cities total have earned the Bicycle friendly recognition nationally. The communities were among 1,500 to apply.

The recognition means Houghton and Marquette have made an effort toward the “5 e’s”:

-equity, diversity & inclusion: a bicycle friendly America for everyone

-engineering: creating safe and convenient places to ride and park

-education: giving people of all ages and abilities the skills and confidence to ride

-encouragement: creating a strong bike culture that welcomes and celebrates bicycling

-evaluation & planning: planning for bicycling as a safe and viable transportation option
