Icy rescue in Houghton County

Stanton Township –The  Houghton County Sheriff’s office rescued two men after one of them fell through the ice at about 9:15 Sunday night.

A 22-year old Macomb man was clinging to the break wall at Stanton Township Beach after falling into the water.  A second man was on the break wall when Houghton County Sheriff’s deputies arrived.

A Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officer pulled the man out of the water and onto the break wall with a rope.

Then, rescuers used ropes to guide the men along the icy break wall back to shore.

The Macomb man was transported to UP Health Systems-Portage where he was treated for hypothermia.

Mercy EMS, Stanton Township First Responders and the DNR assisted at the scene.
