Fire Prevention Month

ISHPEMING, Mich – Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared the month of October Fire Prevention Month.

With the recent house fire happening October 5th, learning fire safety tips has become more important than ever.

The theme for this year presented by The National Fire Protection Association is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!” with 17% of fires that started in the kitchen according Michigan Prevention.

Ishpeming Fire Chief Jason Annala says, “I believe the theme this year is cooking fires. That is the number one cause of fires in the U.S., and the number one cause of fires in the U.S., and the number one cause of fire accidents in homes. The safety tips I always tell kids is to stay three feet away from the stove and don’t be playing with the burners.”

The fire department also encourages that home owners actively check your smoke alarm, have a fire extinguisher in the home, and unplug all kitchen appliances when you aren’t using them.
