Warming Center continues operating through Coronavirus pandemic

MARQUETTE — While the coronavirus has shut down many establishments around the UP, one local charity has remained open.

The Room at the Inn has not stopped operations on their mission to help the less fortunate. Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s mandate does not apply to emergency shelters, so this lets the Warming Center continue their operations with a few alterations.

“We want to keep safe, social distancing,” said Nick Emmendorfer, Executive Director at the Warming Center. “This has been described to keep people five to six feet away from each other. I am right now exploring options in the community of trying to find a facility where establish a temporary emergency shelter. So as long as we have the guest hang out at the churches all day, which is what we’re doing, were allowed to use our warming center to prep the meals and bring them over from the warming center to the church.”

The warming center will continue to operate within their limits while the population waits on the outcome of the Covid–19 situation.
