MARQUETTE — On Saturday, February 22, Northern Michigan University Queers and Allies will host their 24th Annual Drag Show at Vandament Arena.

The show will feature six drag queens and kings coming in from Chicago to perform. Also performing that evening will be the winner of Friday night’s Amateur Drag Show, judged by the queens and kings.

Queers and Allies co–president Nat Ehrig says that this annual event is an opportunity for the university and the surrounding community to have a good time while showing their support for the LGBT community.

“It’s just a fantastic opportunity for the community, both at NMU and Marquette in general,” said Ehrig. “In February there often isn’t a ton to do, so it’s great to have a big show where anyone in the community, no matter how much experience they have with drag, can come out and have a great time. Also it shows people that they can be their true, authentic selves, and that there will be people who will support them in the U.P.”

Co-president Henry Sale says that events like the Annual Drag Show are an important part of making sure LGBT students feel included on their campus.

“It’s a really big deal for students to feel at home here and for them to find that group that they jive with, or at least that has similar experiences or feelings that they have,” said Sale. “So by having our group, we get to meet tons of students that not only we relate with, but they can relate with us. And then they get to have somebody that, if they have a bad experience or when they have a good experience, they get to tell us about that. And we get to take that information and turn it around to administration so that—not only for the current student body, but the student body that’s coming in year after year—we make sure that Northern Michigan is a friendly and inclusive campus for all of those students.”

The 24th Annual Drag Show will begin at 7:00 p.m. The show is free for staff and students with an NMU ID, and the cost to attend for the general public is $5. More information is available on the event Facebook page.
