MARQUETTE COUNTY — With 2020 just around the corner, many are thinking about their New Year’s resolutions. Getting in shape or losing a certain amount of weight is one of the most popular resolutions each year, but it also tends to be one of the hardest for people to stick with.

Beginning an exercise routine in January can be tough, especially if you’ve never done it before. Sarah Young, a personal trainer for Anytime Fitness in Marquette, says that going to a gym or fitness center is a great way to start. Talking with trainers about what you want to achieve and getting advice on the best way to do that can save you from a lot of the frustration that may come with trying to do it on your own.

“Having a knowledgeable staff who can guide you to do things that are going to help you reach your goals and having people know where you need to go to reach your goals is a lot more beneficial than following a video on Instagram or YouTube that isn’t as obtainable for what your goals are going to be,” said Young. “It’s little baby steps, you don’t have to do the big goal right away. Just come talk to us and we’ll help set you up with a 30–day plan or just tell you what you need to do to reach your goals.”

Of course, once you’ve started your fitness journey, it can be hard to maintain your motivation. Many people end up quitting before they’ve achieved their goals for the new year. According to Young, one of the most common reasons people give up on their fitness resolutions that they had unrealistic expectations from the beginning.

“I think the main reason is people want to see results really fast, and that’s usually not the case,” said Young. “A lot of people want to come in and lose 20 pounds or so, and they want to see that in a month, and that’s just not realistic. It’s about one to two pounds a week that you want to be losing. So I think it’s just not seeing the results right away. But it’s about consistency. Keep coming, keep progressing, keep that nutrition in check, and you’ll be just fine.”
