DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans is accepting donations for Christmas wish list

MARQUETTE — The DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans has put out a Christmas wish list for its residents, and it’s a great opportunity for the community to make sure the veterans have a happy holiday.

Each year the wish list is a major part of Christmas for the Jacobetti Home. They are always in need of items for residents throughout the year, and the community consistently comes through during this season of giving.

The Jacobetti Home has received plenty of personal care items for this Christmas, and now they are in need of more gifts that will be special for the residents, such as watches, pajama bottoms, and zip-up hoodies.

“Right now we have lots of presents coming in,” said Activity Coordinator Shari Smith. “We actually have a present for every member, and that was based off of the donations and the wish list. So the members got to go pick out a gift for themselves and their families, and then that gift was wrapped and put aside. Then on Christmas Eve and Christmas day they’re going to get that present and open it up to make it special for them.”

Many residents aren’t able to spend Christmas with their loved ones. Getting a special present on Christmas day can give them a little holiday cheer just when they need it.

“A lot of the families are out of the area or they’re only able to come on the weekend,” said Smith. “Christmas and Christmas Eve now are in the middle of the week, so that’s kind of difficult because not everybody gets the whole week off. So with the extra special things that the community has provided and that are on this list, that’ll give them an extra special Christmas on Christmas day here.”

Thursday afternoon, Junior ROTC members from the Houghton area visited the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans to play bingo with the residents. It’s just one more way the community is helping the veterans to have a merry Christmas season.
