Man evaluated after active shooter call at Iron Mountain church

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain Police Department was dispatched via 911 to the Immaculate Conception Church at 500 East Blaine Street at approximately 9:15 am on 09/15/19.

The initial caller advised that she believed that there was an “active shooter” in the church.  The caller had witnessed the suspect in the church during service acting strangely and being disruptive.  The subject was reaching into a backpack as the caller ran/exited the church.  The caller believed that the subject was about to beguine shooting inside the church.

Two IMPD Officers arrived on scene within minutes and took the subject into custody outside the church in a courtyard area.  The 67-year-old male subject was secured and detained pending further investigation at that time.

The 67-year-old male was evaluated locally and petitioned by the court ordering him to receive further evaluation in reference to his mental competency.

A report will be forwarded to Dickinson County Prosecutor Lisa Richards for review and the issuance of possible criminal charges.

The Iron Mountain Police Department was assisted on scene by the Kingsford Public Safety Department, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department and the Michigan State Police.  ​
