One dead in Portage Township after single-vehicle crash
PORTAGE TOWNSHIP — A personal injury accident in Portage township leaves one person dead.
At approximately 2:30 pm earlier tonight, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the single–vehicle crash on Superior near Boundary Road, in Portage Township.
The crash happened after a 59–year–old Portage Township man attempted to re-correct his vehicle, after the passenger side tires went off the road.
After traveling across the road and into a ditch, the vehicle struck a culvert, then bounced over a driveway and through a residential yard approximately 75 feet, before striking a large tree.
The damage to the vehicle was substantial, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident, which is still under investigation.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Houghton City Police, and the Hurontown Fire Department, Mercy Ambulance.
