Parts of Iron Street to be closed off due to partial Kirkwood building collapse

NEGAUNEE — A dangerous structure in Negaunee has caused the city to close down part of the Iron Street, ahead of Pioneer Days.

In a city commission meeting last night, the Negaunee city council voted to close part of Iron Street, due to the historic Kirkwood building partially collapsing.

The city commission made it clear that for safety reasons, they want to demolish the building, citing a letter from UP Engineers and Architects.

The UPEA deemed the building unsafe, and its collapse “imminent.”

The owner of the building, Eric Milijour, plans to revamp the building, and got a consultation from GEI Consultants, who said otherwise.

It was voted to then close a portion of Iron Street off to vehicles and pedestrians until the structure is safe again.
