Explosive discovered and rendered safe in Gogebic County

GOEGEBIC COUNTY — A road is back open after a hand grenade was discovered near Powdermill Creek in Bessemer Tuesday.

At approximately 2:25 p.m. Tuesday, the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a possible hand grenade found near the Powdermill Creek at Eli Avenue in Bessemer.

Deputies discovered what appeared to be an old hand grenade that had been submerged for some time. The area was closed to traffic for safety.

Authorities say the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad in Grayling was contacted for assistance. The MSP Bomb Squad responded to Bessemer and the grenade was rendered safe. The road reopened just before 8:30 p.m.
