Suicide Hill hosts 132nd annual Ski Tournament

MARQUETTE COUNTY — On January 22nd, an event that has been going on for over a century is hosting its 132nd annual tournament.

The Suicide Hill Ski Tournament hosts many different skiers from around the world although many participants were from the United States. Slovenia, Norway, Finland and the U.S. were all in attendance at the tournament and even some locals were competing.

Negaunee and Ishpeming have strong ties to this tournament and the Ishpeming Ski club which goes as far back as the late 1800s.

“Our club goes all the way back to 1887,” said Head Ski Coach for the Ishpeming Ski Club, Gary Rasmussen. “This is a 132 years in a row that we have had a national and/or international ski jumping tournament. Our club has a proud history of Olympians, national champions, hill record holders and some of the best ski jumpers in American history are from Negaunee and Ishpeming.”

This yearly tournament is a part of the USA Nordic U.S. Cup Five Hills Tournament Tour.
