Beautification Grant given to help lessen cigarette butt littering

MARQUETTE — You might have noticed some cigarette disposals around downtown Marquette, that is because of a beautification grant.

The Marquette Downtown Development Authority (MDDA) applied for and received a grant for $2,250 from the Keep America Beautiful Foundation.

The intent of the grant is for two things:

“Number one is to purchase cigarette butt dispensers to install throughout the downtown and secondly to really bring attention to the fact that cigarette butts are litter” said Executive Director, Mona Lang.

The DDA worked with the Superior Watershed Partnership to implement the grant.

The reason the DDA felt this was important was because littered cigarette butts go into the storm sewer which disposes in the lake.
