UPDATE: A man and woman attempt to abduct a child in Portage Township

UPDATE: PORTAGE — Deputies investigated this incident and found the individuals that attempted to abduct the child.

After interviewing the individuals and several witnesses it was determined that there was a communication issue.

English is a second language to one of the persons identified as a suspect and that is where the confusion may have been caused.

The person in the red truck was identified and were cooperative and cleared.

The Mackinac County Prosecutor reviewed the case and he also concluded that there was no crime attempted or committed.

It was determined that the individuals do not pose a threat to the general public.

The matter is now closed.

PORTAGE — At noon on Monday, September 17, deputies from the Mackinac County Sheriff’s office were called to a Curtis business in Portage Township.

A woman had reported that two subjects had attempted to abduct her child.

Deputies were told by the woman that a man and woman had approached her, stating that they were from out of town and engaged in a conversation about dogs.

They tried to entice the 3-year-old by asking if the child “wanted to see their dog,” then grabbed the child and attempted to bring the child to the vehicle.

The mother was able to free her child from the woman and the vehicle fled the scene in an unknown direction.

The child was unharmed.

The vehicle is described as:

• An older model, dull red full-sized pick-up truck in good condition, no cap
• Dog proof netting and a collie in the back seat.
• The make of the vehicle is unknown
• May have a Michigan “FOP” specialty license plate.

The suspects are described as:

• A White male who is approximately 60-years-old. He has a mustache, medium build and was wearing clean clothing.
• A White female who is middle-aged with bleach blonde hair. Has medium build and height and was wearing heavy make-up and a green pantsuit.
