MAPS takes action on lead tainted water, redesigning parking lots

MARQUETTE — Bothwell Middle School celebrated the completion of their newly repaired parking lot Monday evening with a ribbon cutting.

As part of their sinking fund projects for the year, Marquette Area Public Schools decided to revamp the middle school’s parking lot, which was in need of repair and improvements. In addition to re-paving the parking lot, the project addressed traffic issues created by the decreased use of school buses.

Besides the lot improvement, Marquette Area Public Schools has recently taken action in regards to elevated lead levels found in their water systems.

“The reason for those additional tests were to determine if it was a piping issue within our buildings, or a fixture issue,” said Marquette Area Public Schools Superintendent, Bill Saunders. “In some instances we may have some concerns with piping and in others, its a fixture issue. It gives us a real clear direction of what we have to do to fix the problem.”

Next summer, the district plans to improve the parking lot at Marquette Senior High School.
