HOUGHTON COUNTY — On Friday, August 10, the Calumet Post troopers were dispatched to a two car crash on Denton Road near US-41 around 4:30 p.m.

A vehicle driven by a 59-year-old female was stopped on Denton Road waiting to make a left turn when it was rear ended by another vehicle, resulting in minor damages and no injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle was a 19-year-old male from L’Anse. It was determined that the male had no insurance and an improper registration plate on his vehicle.

During investigation, Michigan State Police utilized a canine, which gave a positive indication for narcotics on the at-fault driver’s vehicle. A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of drug paraphernalia and a pipe bomb in the vehicle.

Michigan State Police contacted the Bomb Squad and secured the scene for the arrival of the bomb squad members. The bomb squad was able to render the pipe bomb safe by making it non-functioning.

The 19-year-old was arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon, no insurance, and improper registration plate. He is being held in the Houghton County Jail pending arraignment.

Troopers as the scene were assisted by Houghton Police Department, Michigan State Police Canine Unit, Michigan State Police Bomb Squad, and Superior Service Towing.
