‘Spoofing’ calls reported in Sault Ste. Marie

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Sault Ste. Marie Police Department has received a tip that “spoof” calls could be making their way around that area.

According to the department, a resident of Sault Ste. Marie received a telephone call today asking her not to hang up and if she would take a survey. The telephone number showing where the call came from is a City of Sault Ste. Marie government number. The same resident received a similar call from a number registered to War Memorial Hospital.

Other residents have received the same type of calls from a number that is the main number of the Sault Area Schools. These calls are scams looking for personal information. If the caller asks you to hit a certain button on your phone to stop these calls, or ask for a yes or no response, just hang up the phone. Never give out any personal information like Social Security numbers or bank information over the phone unless you called a known office or person.
