NEGAUNEE — A Mather B. Mine Memorial Dedication Event was held at Negaunee High School today. The event helped remember all of the men who had lost their lives working within the mine.

The event held a ceremony which had State representative, Sara Cambensy, come to speak about the dedication and the strength of the mining community.

The ceremony included the honoring of all miners who had worked in the mines and plaque that was designed by a senior at Negaunee High School, Davis Bagley. Davis Bagley and another senior, Keegan McGonigle, also put together a documentary of the Mather B. Mine to help tell its story.

“You know we talk a lot about community history and heritage,” said Negaunee Teacher, Andy Skewis. “This is a chance to kind of make that real and for students to take an active role in that and realize the significant impact that mining had. The sacrifices that all of the men and their families have made because of it.”

The documentary is called, A Vanishing Breed: The Men and Memories of Mather B., which was premiered today at the dedication.
