Lost Ohio woman located and escorted back to safety

AUTRAIN TOWNSHIP — An Ohio woman was located and escorted back to safety after becoming lost near Perch Lake on Wednesday.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., the Alger County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a female subject who was lost in a wooded area near Perch Lake in AuTrain Township. Melanie Sue Kaiser, a 61 year-old from Ohio, stated that she was walking in the woods near Perch Lake Road when she became disoriented.

Kaiser told dispatchers that she was not injured, but could not find her way back to the cabin she was staying in. The Alger County Rescue 21 squad responded to the call, and set out to assist her out of the woods.

The dispatch center used the updated 911 system to obtain accurate coordinates of the caller, making a quick rescue possible. Officers located Kaiser and escorted her to safety within 40 minutes of the 911 call.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that texting 911 is a viable option if cell phone coverage is poor.
