NEGAUNEE — After their spring break, students at Lakeview Elementary planted marigolds in their greenhouse to begin another year of marigold mania.

On Monday, fourth-grade students brought their flowers from the school to Miners Park to plant them in the gardens, with help from the Negaunee Beautification Committee. The planting gives the children a chance to get ownership of the park.

“That’s what I’m trying to instill in them so that when they get to be older, they will volunteer and understand a community experience,” said Beautification Committee Organizer Anna Mattson. “I love it when I’m here, and they’re so excited showing grandma or grandpa the flowers they planted. It goes on all summer, it doesn’t stop next Tuesday.”

The flowerbeds will be taken care of by members of the beautification committee. Mattson has been working with Lakeview Elementary students for five years.
