Bringing Ukulele’s to the community

MARQUETTE — An organization called Music is the Foundation and its guest speaker brought the joy of the ukulele to the Peter White Public Library today. The ukulele all-day program featured a teen and adult workshop that involved learning some notes and songs.

Music is the Foundation had also donated two ukuleles to the library for patrons to come out and rent them at the library. This program will try and bring this instrument out into the Marquette community.

“The thing about the ukulele is that it is a social instrument,” said, Ukulele Ambassador of Michigan, Ben Hassenger. “I like to call it the most folk of folk instruments. This is because it brings folks together. So you will rarely see just one person in the corner playing a ukulele. Usually see groups of people playing and singing together, because it really does bring people together. That’s kind of the magic of this little instrument.”

The workshops also held a showing of the movie, “Mighty Uke” and everyone participated in a group strum session.
