Alger County inmate sentenced to prison
MUNISING — The Alger County inmate who was found guilty for killing his cellmate in July 2017 was sentenced to prison on Monday.
23 year-old DeShawn Madden was sentenced to a minimum of 60 years and a maximum of 90 years. In April, Madden was found guilty for killing his cellmate at Alger County Correctional Facility, Rodriguez Montez Burks in July 2017, due to his sexual orientation.
During his address to the court, Madden admitted to killing Burks.
“Yeah, that [exploitative] was done intentionally, yeah I own up to that [exploitative]. If ya’ll were in my situation, who is to say that [exploitative] wouldn’t play out the same way,” he said.
Madden was already serving time for three crimes out of Wayne County, including armed robbery. Madden will be serving his sentence consecutively.
