Shrek the Musical brings fairy tales to the U.P.

GWINN — Fairy tale creatures, princesses, and heroic ogres are coming to Gwinn this weekend, as the Gwinn High School Drama Club performs Shrek the Musical.

Based on the blockbuster animated film, Shrek the Musical transforms the stage into a swamp, and features all of the memorable characters. Shrek is a hideous ogre living contentedly alone; however, his solitude is disrupted when a band of misfit fairytale creatures show up on his property. Through heroic acts and adventures, Shrek is sent on a mission to rescue a princess, but he discovers something more in himself.

“We’ve gotten help from the different theatres in the area – the Vista, the Lake Superior Theatre in Marquette – they’ve loaned us costumes, helped with props,” said Director, Kyle Hantz. “A lot of parents and students stayed late after school and helped make sure that the whole set comes together, everything gets put together – in a really big and fantastic way. This show is pretty huge.”

The production opens Friday evening at 7pm at the high school, and also runs on Saturday at 7pm. There is a matinee performance on Sunday at 2pm, as well.

Tickets can be purchased at the door, and are $5 for students, and $7 for adults.
