UPDATE: One dead after single-vehicle accident near Sugarloaf Mountain

UPDATE: Monday, March 26th at 8:45 a.m.

The names of the two people involved in the fatal single-vehicle accident near Sugarloaf Mountain on Sunday have been released.

Investigators say 21 year-old Austin Mitchell of Ishpeming was driving a 2010 Mercury Milan on County Road 550 when the vehicle left the roadway, struck a power pole and rolled over into a ditch. Mitchell was transported to UPHS – Marquette where he was treated for injuries and later released.

The passenger, 21 year-old Jacob Weslin of Marquette was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

A State Police Accident Reconstructionist and an Advanced Accident Investigator were sent to the scene. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.


MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — One person is dead and another was transported to the hospital following a single-vehicle accident early Sunday morning in Marquette Township.

At 4:50 a.m, troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post were dispatched to County Road 550 just north of Sugarloaf Mountain for a single-vehicle personal injury accident. Investigators say that the vehicle was southbound on County Road 550 when the vehicle left the roadway, struck a power pole and rolled over in the ditch.

The occupants of the vehicle were a 21 year-old from Ishpeming and a 21 year-old from Marquette. One occupant was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was transported to UPHS – Marquette to be treated for injuries.

The investigation is ongoing. Names are being withheld at this time.

The Marquette City Fire Department, NMU Public Safety, UPHS EMS and the Marquette Township Fire Department assisted on the scene.
