Disable the Label returns for fourth year

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — The Superiorland Kiwanis Aktion Club and the Upper Peninsula Health Plan hosted an event at the Westwood Mall Friday in honor of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

Disable the Label aims to educate and raise awareness for those living with disabilities. Local organizations who provide support to individuals with disabilities in Marquette County talked with visitors about the services they provide and several offered simulations of different disabilities.

The takeaway from the event is that people with disabilities can lead normal lives with some assistance.

“I’ve been out-cast, having a hearing loss, and falling through the cracks and it hurts,” said Morgana Penglase, the president of the Superiorland Kiwanis Aktion Club. “We are capable, we are strong and we can do it. Just because we have a disability doesn’t mean we should be thrown to the side.”

This was the fourth Disable the Label event.
