MDOT/MSP review road condition expectations

ISHPEMING — In Michigan, winter has arrived to stay by early February. That makes it a great time to review what drivers should expect during winter storm events, and what their responsibilities are for getting to their destinations safely.

Today the Michigan Department of Transportation, the Michigan State Police and others met to present information on how roads are maintained each winter, and how Michigan drivers should respond to winter driving conditions.

“This is the first time we’ve done this. Basically at MDOT we’re going to go over the winter maintenance goals, what we’re trying to accomplish, and who’s responsible for plowing which stretches of highway,” said MDOT Communications Representative Dan Weingarten.

Some topics included the tools that are used to clear the roads as well as new technologies.

“These are just messaged that need to get out every winter and people need to be thinking about them,” said Weingarten.  “We’re about halfway through, hopefully, winter now, and we felt like this would be a good time to get those messages out.”

Each winter provides the agencies with a chance to make the winter safer for all on the road.
