Fire department asks residents to consider adopting a fire hydrant

MARQUETTE — Keeping the areas around a fire hydrant clean can be the difference between life and death.

The Marquette Fire Department is asking residents to “Adopt a Fire Hydrant.” Due to the amount of snow we’ve gotten recently, hydrants might be hard to reach in the event of a fire.

It’s simple — pick a fire hydrant by your house, apartment, or wherever you live, and make sure it’s accessible to the firemen.

“If a fire hydrant is covered when we respond to a fire, it may take an additional two to three minutes to hook up the fire line. Too hook up water supply to a hydrant that’s covered is going to make a big difference in response,” said Fire Inspector Tom Dunleavy.

If you live by a fire hydrant, please consider adopting one, it could make a difference for you or your neighbor.
