Hundreds gather in downtown Marquette for Women’s March

MARQUETTE — Over the weekend, millions of people across the United States marched in the 2018 Women’s March. This was also the case in Marquette on Sunday.

The second Marquette Women’s March was held on the anniversary of the first Women’s March in order to celebrate the strides made by women during the past year. One notable victory was the increase in the amount of women running for political offices, which coincides with the theme for this year’s march, “Power to the Polls.”

“They’ve been running and they’ve been winning,” said Judy Kitchen, one of the coordinators of this year’s Women’s March. “We continue to encourage women to run for an office, we encourage women to register to vote, to get their friends out there to vote and we will continue to make a big difference.”

Hundreds of people marched from Main Street to Front Street and then down Washington Street carrying signs calling for change or sharing messages of empowerment. The march ended with a rally in front of the post office where several speakers shared their stories about what the Women’s Movement means to them.
