MAPS office hosts open house for GED program

MARQUETTE — Over 20 million people have passed the General Education Diploma (GED) test since its inception in 1942. The Marquette Area Public Schools Adult and Community Education Office is looking to increase that number for people in the area who are seeking a credential that is equivalent to a high school diploma.

MAPS hosted an open house on Tuesday to discuss the five-part test and services the district offers to students looking to earn their GED. One of these services is a program called Today’s Learners, Tomorrow’s Leaders.

With the program, students ages 16-22 can receive tutoring and have their GED test fees covered. GED Instructor Mike Brown said that this program is an option for students who may not fit in a traditional classroom setting.

“In a traditional classroom, they may have found that they got a little lost. There were 25-30 kids in a class and they weren’t getting the attention that they needed. They’ve come here to find a different path, and we’re getting there,” said Brown.

Students in the program use an online software called Odysseyware, which offers a way to learn the material on the test at their own pace. Brown also provides supplemental instruction to students.

MAPS does not currently offer GED tutoring to community members over the age of 22. If you are over 22 and are interested in taking the GED, you must register online HERE.
