ONTONAGON — Trooper from the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post were dispatched on a call for a young female who had fallen into the Ontonagon River on November 24th.

A local man walking his dog found the girl and immediately called 911.

The trooper who appeared on scene determined the girl had slipped off the boardwalk and fell into the river. Due to ice build–up along the shoreline, the victim was not able to exit without assistance.

It was established quickly that the girl had severe symptoms of hypothermia and needed immediate medical assistance. The victim was transported to Aspirus Hospital in Ontonagon where it was confirmed she had a dangerously low internal body temperature.

Without the quick response of the citizen and the Wakefield Post trooper, it is believed that the victim may not have survived.
