ISHPEMING — The Western Marquette County Health Foundation handed out just under $22,000 in grants and sponsorships Wednesday afternoon.

The foundation awarded seven different grant proposals with amounts ranging from $1,000 to $6,751.60. Successful applicants included Lake Superior Hospice, Superior Shore Systems, Inc., Big Brothers Big Sisters, Negaunee Disc Golf, Partridge Creek Farms, Great Lakes Recovery Center and the City of Negaunee.

Sponsorship requests were also granted to the YMCA of Marquette County and Ishpeming Public Schools for $500 and $595, respectively.

“It’s all about health and wellness in the western part of Marquette County,” said Tom Edmark, chairman of the WMCHF. “This year was rather difficult. We had some really nice grant applications. There were some tough decisions to make as to who we were providing the grant funding to and in what amount.”

The projects were given funds as part of the foundation’s fall grant cycle. There will be another round of grants in the spring.
