UPDATE: Police investigating early morning assault; victim in grave condition

UPDATE: Wednesday, November 1st 3:00 p.m.

The victim of the assault, 48 year-old Wesley Douglas Cook of Sault Ste. Marie died shortly after 10:00 a.m. as a result of the injuries he sustained. Cook’s family has been notified.

Two suspects are lodged at the Chippewa County Jail in connection with the assault. Eighteen year-old Jeremy Jon Lehre of Sault Ste. Marie was arrested on an open murder charge. Twenty-one year-old Aaron Trevor Lehre, also of Sault Ste. Marie, was taken into custody on an unrelated warrant. Both are expected to be officially charged with open murder once all police reports have been filed.

While the relationship between the victim and the suspects is not fully known at this time, they are believed to be acquaintances. Sault Ste. Marie Police Department and the Chippewa County Prosecutor’s Office are still working on the investigation.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned on Thursday.


SAULT STE. MARIE — One man is in grave condition and another is in police custody after an assault early Wednesday morning.

Officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department were dispatched to the 200 block of West 12th Avenue just after 3:00 a.m. The victim of the assault, a 48 year-old white male, was immediately transported to War Memorial Hospital.

The victim is currently in grave condition. He will be transported to Ann Arbor by air.

A white male suspect in his late teens or early 20s was taken into police custody. As of 7:45 a.m., authorities are interviewing witnesses. The Michigan State Police Crime Lab in Grayling also has an evidence team responding to the scene.

The investigation is ongoing. No additional information is available at this time.
