DELTA COUNTY–One Delta County Search and Rescue member is being honored as a hero this week.

While conducting training on the Escanaba waterfront, team members witnessed a distressed kayaker who had capsized his boat.
The kayaker was not wearing a PFD and was struggling to stay afloat over 100 yards off shore.

Search and rescue member Hal Burton was wearing a rescue vest at the time and selflessly swam out to the victim. He assisted the victim back to shallow water as other members helped both ashore. Delta County Search and Rescue’s boat was being launched in the meantime and were able to recover the victim’s kayak.

Burton was presented with a lifesaving award by Deputy Dan Lacarte earlier this week.
