CHIPPEWA COUNTY — Deputies from the Chippewa County Sheriff’s office and the Michigan State Police responded to a report of a vehicle entering the St. Mary’s River at the end of 9 Mile Road.

Several individuals on a boat contacted authorities at 11:33 a.m. after noticing that a vehicle was partially submerged in the river. The driver, a 73 year-old male, had driven into the water several hours prior and was stuck in the vehicle.

Officials believe he became disoriented and thought he was travelling west towards I-75. The vehicle was actually heading east and ended up in the river.

He was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure, but there were no complaints of injuries on the scene. Sault Ste. Marie Fire/EMS, Bruce Township Fire Department and the Michigan State Police assisted on the scene.
