UPDATE: Drowning victim was student at Hancock H.S.

UPDATE — Monday, September 25th, 2017 10:10 a.m.

Officials at Hancock High School confirmed this morning that the young man has passed away. Grief counselors are on hand to talk to students.

Hancock Schools Superintendent Kipp Beaudoin said they are humbled by the outpouring of concern from the community and appreciate the support they have received. The victim’s name has not been released pending further investigation.


HOUGHTON — Police in the City of Houghton are investigating a water-related accident that occurred over the weekend.

The police department was dispatched to the docks on E. Lakeshore Drive Saturday around 3:15 p.m. on the report of a 17-year-old unconscious male. Bystanders on scene began CPR and upon arrival, emergency responders from several different agencies began life-saving measures.

The teenager was transported to UP Heath System – Portage, then UP Health System – Marquette, and later to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. No further information on the teen’s condition is available at this time.

The accident is still under investigation.
