Defending his mom, boy stabs suspect during domestic violence incident

SUGAR ISLAND — A 12-year-old boy stabbed a man in the back during a domestic violence incident at midnight Monday morning on Sugar Island.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a residence on Lake George Road on the report of a domestic violence incident involving the discharge of a firearm and a stabbing. During the domestic assault, the suspect fired multiple rounds into the floor.

Fearing for his mother’s life, the boy stabbed the suspect four times in the back. After the stabbing, the mother and child ran out the back door in an attempt to escape the suspect.

Evidence suggests the suspect fired multiple rounds in their direction as they ran towards the St. Mary’s River. Responding officers located the mother and son.

The Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team was contacted to assist the sheriff’s office. After several hours, the suspect was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

The sheriff’s office is requesting multiple felony charges, including felonious assault, aggravated domestic assault, reckless discharge of a firearm and felony firearm. Upon completion of their investigation, the incident will be turned over to the prosecutor’s office for review.
