UPDATE: Prisoner facing murder charge for killing cellmate

UPDATE — Wednesday, August 30, 2017 1:00 p.m.

The identity of an inmate who allegedly killed another inmate last month has been identified.

Deshawn Madden, 23, is facing a first-degree murder charge for the death of his cellmate, Montez Burks, 23.

Both were inmates at Alger Correctional Facility. The incident happened around 2:00 p.m. July 20.

Madden is serving time for three crimes out of Wayne County, including armed robbery. He’s currently being held at the Marquette Branch Prison.

Madden will be arraigned in Alger County District Court September 12.


UPDATE — Friday, July 21th, 2017 1:00 P.M.

The prisoner killed by another inmate has been identified by authorities. According to the Michigan Department of Corrections Spokesperson Chris Gautz, Rodriguez Montez Burks, 23, was killed by his cellmate in an incident that occurred in their cell around 2 P.M. on Thursday.

The alleged suspect is currently being held in isolation at the facility, his name will not be released at this time pending arraignment. Officials from the Michigan State Police collected evidence last night at the scene of the crime and the investigation is ongoing.

Burks was sentenced in Livingston County on the charges of fleeing a police officer, third degree and receiving and concealing stolen property-motor vehicle.

MUNISING — The Michigan State Police is investigating a homicide that took place at Alger Correctional Facility Thursday where a prisoner is suspected of killing another prisoner.

ABC 10 confirmed the prisoner’s death with Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz. The inmate was pronounced dead at 2:00 p.m. ET.

His name is not being released. Gautz says prison officials do have a prisoner segregated who they believe caused the other inmate’s death.
