Spoofing incident reported to police

ISHPEMING — The Ishpeming Police are reminding citizens to never give out any personal information over the phone after a recent spoofing incident was reported to the department.

Police were notified Monday by a resident who received a call from a subject claiming she had won a cruise. The caller ID on the woman’s phone indicated the call was coming from the City of Ishpeming.

Spoofing occurs when a caller falsifies their caller ID to disguise their identity. Anyone who is caught illegally spoofing can face penalties of up to $10,000 for each violation.
