Local AMVETS celebrate veterans with picnic, fishing

WEST ISHPEMING — A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Tuesday afternoon in West Ishpeming to celebrate the re-introduction of Veteran’s Fishing Day.

The local Philip Petry AMVETS Post 122 is located on Lake Unky and hosts a slew of activities geared towards veterans in the community. One of those events is bringing veterans from the DJ Jacobetti Home to the lake for a picnic once a month during the summer. With live music and great food, organizers say this is a great way to get out of the facility and outside.

“Entertainment, especially for these guys in the Jacobetti, is a hard thing, to get the out and into the public and give them the ability to get out and enjoy company and comradery amongst other veterans,” said Terry Carlson, First Vice Commander of AMVETS Post 122 in Ishpeming,

And now fishing is also an available opportunity for the vets at these monthly picnics. The organization also hosts other functions, like monthly bingo sessions, at the facility. AMVETS, which is a congressional-charted Veteran’s Service Organization, has been around since 1947.
