Police warning residents of fraudulent phone calls

NEGAUNEE — The Michigan State Police Negaunee Post wants the public to be aware of a new phone solicitation scheme currently targeting Marquette County residents.

Callers will claim they are members of the Michigan State Police and ask for money. As of Wednesday morning, three elderly residents have reported receiving these types of calls. Officials with the Michigan State Police will never call and ask for money or bank account information.

Callers typically give the victim a sense of urgency while pretending to be a legitimate official. To avoid becoming a victim of a scam it’s suggested to not give personal information to unknown callers, avoid responding to unsolicited emails from unknown senders, confirm the identity of a contact by speaking with the identified source, ask for a call-back name and number, along with reporting any suspicious contacts to police.
