The Michigan State Police Negaunee Post has released the names of the two teenagers involved in a fatal ATV accident Saturday night in Sands Township.

Haley Vanabel, 14, of Marquette died as a result of injuries she sustained in the crash. Vanabel’s passenger, Zoe Kurian, 14, of Marquette was not injured.

The crash happened at 7:30 p.m. on Honor Camp Trail in Sands Township. Vanabel was driving a side-by-side ATV when she went off the trail, up a dirt embankment and rolled the ATV.


SANDS TOWNSHIP — An ATV accident Saturday evening has claimed the life of a teenager.

At 7:30 p.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to Honor Camp Trail, a logging road located approximately one-mile north of M-553 in Sands Township. Two teenagers riding in a side-by-side ATV went off the trail and up a dirt embankment, causing the ATV to roll over.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The passenger was not injured.

Police are not releasing the names of the victims until family members are notified. Sands Township First Responders, Marquette County Search & Rescue, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office and UP Health System – Marquette EMS all assisted the Michigan State Police at the scene.
