Bill sponsored by Kivela passes in State House

MARQUETTE — One of the final bills former State Rep. John Kivela (D-Marquette) sponsored passed in the House of Representatives Monday.

House Bill number 4424 passed unanimously, 104-0. The legislation would increase penalties for illegally bringing a deer carcass across state lines from another state where deer there are known to have Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

Kivela introduced the bill in March. CWD has not been found in the U.P. deer herd. It has been found in downstate deer and in Wisconsin.

The bill now heads to the senate for consideration. Kivela passed away May 9th.
