Couple rescued by the USCG after falling through the ice

STANTON TOWNSHIP — A couple from Midland, MI was rescued by the United States Coast Guard after falling through the ice Friday afternoon in Stanton Township.

At approximately 1:25 p.m., emergency crews were dispatched to Houghton Breakers on a report of two people had fallen through the ice and were stranded. The husband was about 25 yards from shore. His wife was about 150 yards from shore.

Both people were rescued by personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard – Portage. The woman was taken to UP Health System – Portage for treatment.
