Wicked winds whip across U.P.

ISHPEMING — Strong winds off the Straights of Mackinac have caused officials to issue a high wind warning.

Officials are instructing motorists to reduce their speed to 20 miles per hour, turn on their four-way flashers and to use the outside lane.

Vehicles vulnerable to high winds, like pick-up trucks with campers, motor homes, vehicles pulling trailers and enclosed semi-truck trailers, are urged to exercise extreme caution.

Officials are checking for changes periodically. Tune your radio to AM 530 or 1610 for updates.

In the central U.P., the National Weather Service has issued a gale warning from Marquette to Whitefish Point until 10 a.m. Tuesday morning. Winds of up to 31 knots can be expected with gusts up to 42 knots. Waves are expected to range between seven and ten foot waves.
