Landfill could become option for U.P. counties
WISCONSIN — The Dickinson County Solid Waste Management Planning Committee is gearing up for a presentation next month at the Dickinson County Board Meeting.
The committee will be recommending some amendments to the board, including one that would allow the county to accept and haul certain materials to a landfill in Wisconsin. The landfill, owned by Niagara Development, LLC, is licensed to accept low-hazard materials and demolition waste- things like paper sludge, power plant ash and foundry sand- to name a few.
They’ve been accepting these things at the landfill for decades. A few U.P. Counties have expressed interest in utilizing the facility. If counties in Upper Michigan do decide to start bringing those products to the landfill, officials say that could lead to more jobs at the company.
“Our site is much more desirable by manufacturers and other groups if we have an active landfill,” said Niagara Development, LLC President/Owner Eric Spirtas. “When they come in the first thing they say is ‘Do you have electric? Do you have gas? Do you have water? And you have a landfill?’ The big question mark comes up and they say wow, let’s take a look at it and see if we can make a deal.”
The next Dickinson County Board Meeting is set for September 12th.
