Man hospitalized after vehicle-pedestrian accident

SANDS TOWNSHIP — A Gwinn man is in the hospital after a vehicle-pedestrian accident in Sands Township Sunday.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post say they were dispatched to a personal injury accident on M-553 near Station Road just after noon.

A Subaru Outback driven by 73-year old Wells Chapin of Gwinn struck 23-year old Jesse Tuimala also of Gwinn after he crossed the road on foot from a vehicle parked on the shoulder of the road.

Tuimala was transported to the hospital and there is no word yet on the extent of his injuries. Chapin was not injured in the accident.

No foul play, alcohol or drugs are suspected at this time. The incident is under investigation.
