HOUGHTON — Though it was just the primary, one race in Houghton County is now over.

The general election isn’t until November, but the Houghton County Clerk already knows she’s staying on the job. That’s because Jennifer Lorenz of Pelkie won’t be facing a Republican challenger after defeating her opponent, Mary Beth Hodges of Lake Linden, in the Democratic Primary on Tuesday.

Houghton County Clerk/Register of Deeds Jennifer Lorenz said, “It meant more to me than I can ever express. It was such a close race, the voting totals were very, very low and I was just so happy last night.”

And now that she can look forward to a second term, Lorenz can move forward on her plans for the county office.

Lorenz said, “I’ve got a brand new veteran’s program I’ve been working on that I will be implementing as soon as I can. Of course, I have to finish with this election and start preparing for the November, but that will be coming for Houghton County residents and it’s going to be a free program.”

Lorenz won’t be officially elected until after November 8th.
